Kirsty Swan

Colorist

I have been working a professional colourist and artist for the last nine years and have always loved working on a great variety of projects.

I have recently provided colours for The Blood Queen, The Blood Queen Annual and Blood Queen vs Dracula series for Dynamite comics. They revolve around a medieval witch who uses dark ‘blood’ magic and it was very enjoyable to work on. I have also previously worked on The Green Hornet, Pantha and the Lady Rawhide Miss Fury crossover, also For Dynamite Comics. I have recently finished working on Storm Warning for Rebellion/2000AD and I have also previously worked on Durham Red for 2000AD as well.  I have fairly recently also worked on several titles for Advent comics and have previously worked for several other companies including Moonstone books, Bluewater comics, Markosia, Print media, Roc Digital Comics as well as many other independent creators over the last few years.

I am generally pretty flexible and would also never dream of letting anyone down. As far as I’m concerned that is and has always been a big no no.

Where were you born? Where did you grow up?
I grew up in south west England.

How about your schooling? Had you gone under any art training?
I did several design qualifications including Graphic design and then later sequential illustration, which was specifically for comics, storyboarding and concept design.

How long have you been working professionally in comics?
I have been getting professional work since 2010.

Which things — both in art and otherwise — have you worked on, besides comics? Are comics a full-time gig for you or part-time?
Comics are a full time gig for me now though I would like to expand into other creative work.

Talk about how you broke into the business –was it easy? Hard? Ups? Downs ? Any interesting anecdotes? When you held your first published work in your hands, how did you feel?

The first work I did was for Bluewater, My first printed book was the Sarah Palin biography. It was exciting. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs since then, it’s been really tough. A lot more ups recently though.

How did you settle on the style(s) you’re currently using? If you have multiple styles how did you develop them?
I tend to develop a slightly different style for most of the things I work on depending on lineart style, the preferances of the editor and what we’re aiming for style wise.

How did your parents take to the idea of working in comics?
Surprisingly well

How would you describe your work space? Is it part of your home, or do you go “to the studio”?
Lol. I work from my bedroom.

What job are you the proudest of?
Tough question and I don’t really know…..

What are you currently drawing? Comments on that project?
I’m currently working on a biography which is really exciting as well as other projects.

What projects do you hope to work on in the future?
I keep an open mind…

Where do you see yourself in five years? ten?
Still working in comics tho’ I’d like to broaden my skills out a bit as well. I’d like to be able to break into pencilling and inking them as well sometime.

What is the interest in comics where you live? Do friends and neighbors know you draw comics for a living? How do they react?
As it happens a lot of my friends are like minded or artists themselves, so it is percieved very well.

What’s first thing you’ll always find in your refrigerator?
Salad. Lol.

What’s your favorite food?
Couldn’t say, I like a varied diet. Anything hot and spicey, I also love salads, fruit, fish amonst loads of other stuff……

What are your favorite interests –Movies? Music? TV? Any hobbies? Sports?
I love anything geeky, comic book films, Jap anime, sci-fi. Playing games on my Wii. Music, yeah, that’s varied. Martial arts training and spending time with friends. I also love thinking up new ideas and concepts for stories and improving my work.

Have you ever thought of writing your own stories?
Yes, I’ve actually recently written a graphic novel, which I am now currently pencilling in my spare time. The working title is Reputations and it will be published by Corvus press when it’s complete.

What’s an average day in your life like?  Walk us through a typical day.
The great thing about being freelance is I have so much flexibility during the day. I’m usually colouring for at least ten hours a day unless I have a clear desk.

Do you have any great, unsold projects in your files that nobody’s gotten to see published?
I did work on a great story with a couple of friends once, Masque of the Dragons. Sadly it was never picked up.

If you weren’t a comic-book artist today, what would you be?
In todays climate? Probably unemployed…. Lol.

The single thing you’d most like to be remembered for in your life is…?
Being a kind person to everyone around me and my passion for life.
