INTERVIEW

Where were you born? Where did you grow up?
I born at the beautiful island known as the Pearl of the Orient and grew up at Muntinlupa city.

Schooling? Art training?
I studied at PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MUNTINLUPA but I stopped in third year. I didn't join any art training just self-trained myself.

How long have you been working professionally in comics?
Since I was 16 I use to work in a local comic book here in the Philippines until now I'm still in the comic world. I have been working for about 6 years!

What things -- both in art and otherwise -- have you worked on besides comics? Are comics a full-time gig for you or part-time?
I only use to work as a comic book artist. Comics life is a full time gig for me. This is also part of my life.

Talk about how you broke into the business --was it easy? Hard? Ups? Downs? Any interesting anecdotes? When you held your first published work in your hands, how did you feel?
Seriously, it's a little bit hard. All you need is patience and practice more to achieve this break. Entering the business is like a life. Sometimes you are at the top, sometimes not.
All you need is to give all your effort to reach your goal and pray to God.

My very first comic book that was published is when I was 16 at the children's comics. It really feels great! All your sacrifice was change into success in entering in this world.

Did you work as an assistant to any other artists?
Yes. One time I assisted Carlo Pagulayan as a background artist in Fantastic four, Unlimited X-men, and Planet hulk. It really feels great working to other artist as a team. Specially the one with the big names. Ha ha ha!

How did your parents take to the idea of working in comics?
My parents are very supportive to me. Its not hard for them to accept that I work as an international artist although its hard to believe that I only work at home and do the page then earn an international rate.

What job are you the proudest of? What's your most embarrassing?
My embarrassing moment is when I got late on submitting the pages for Top cows "Tokyo Knights".
I promise to myself that it won't happen again.

What are you currently drawing? Comments on that project?
My current project is SHADOWMANCER from Markosia it is actually base on UK folk tale. It's a little bit hard working on this title because I am not actually using my own style here. I need to use the style of the current artist that did this.

Talk about your family: Parents, siblings, home situation.
My family is so supportive. Sometimes they all do the household because I am so busy working on the page.

What projects do you hope to work on in the future?
I hope to work on some big comic book companies like marvel, DC, Image or Dark Horse.

Where do you see yourself in five years? ten?
In five years, I hope to see myself as a good illustrator and working at the big comic book companies.

What is the interest in comics where you live? Do friends and neighbors know you draw comics for a living? How do they react?
My friends and my neighbors know that I am working as a comic book artist. They find out that it's hard to believe that I earn international rate at this job.

What's 1 thing you'll always find in your refrigerator?
WATER and ICE! HA HA HA!

What's your favorite food?
I love FOOD! That is why I am soooooo huge right now hehe. Especially kare-kare!
(a Filipino dish)

What are your favorite interests --Movies? Music? TV? Any hobbies? Sports?
Playing PC games, watching movies for reference, and listening to the music specially when I'm working on the pages.

Have you ever thought of writing your own stories?
Yes! I also want to draw my own stories. Actually I use to work as a writer/ artist here in the Philippines.

Ever been in a gang?
Nope!

What's an average day in your life like? Walk us through a typical day.
Just like other peoples routine. Wake up at 7am, do some sketches after that eat my lunch then do the some comic page. At 9pm I eat my dinner then back to the drawing board and finish page.

Any humorous or interesting anecdotes to tell about the comics business?
Take in the influence from outside the field of interest and study them, keep working for the artist you admire and study them. But put your twist on it and you'll have "something to offer.

Do you have any great, unsold projects in your files that nobody's gotten to see published?
Yes I have one. Its actually a manga. It supposed to be published here in the Philippines.

If you weren't a comic-book artist today, what would you be?
I think I would be an animator. I love to draw those animation stuff!!!

Have you taught comic-book art or had any assistants?

I once have an assistants working here in the local comic books. It really feels great working with other artist specially when we share some ideas about comic-book art.

Any closing words for your fans?
To those artist out there, just do your best. Draw the way you want to draw and not the way that other people want you to do.
