Where were you born? Where did you grow up?
I was born in Manila and grew up here in Mandaluyong City.
Schooling? Art training?
I was an Architecture Technology student at the Technological University of the Philippines in Manila. No formal art training, I just know that I could draw and I became interested in comics art during my freshman year in college. I copied a lot of stuff at first. Swipe-boy at large!
How long have you been working professionally in comics?
About a year now I think…on and off… tee-hee!
What things -- both in art and otherwise -- have you worked on, besides comics? Are comics a full-time gig for you or part-time?
I did drawings for a website ufosplanetrock.com but its out of business now so you cant see it. I did a bit of kitchen design drawings for a kitchen-design firm for a while while still studying. I also worked as an illustrator in a division of one of the top paper distributors in the country.
Talk about how you broke into the business --was it easy? Hard? Ups? When you held your first published work in your hands, how did you feel?
I'm not yet "in" the business, quite on and off but its okay. My first published artwork “in comics” I think was a pin-up of Banzai Girl. I didn't even know then that they published it in their annual trade paper back 'til I saw it myself! I'm quite surprised and said “Why is it small?..” haha! Breaking in this kind of profession is difficult even to get you noticed is quite a struggle.
Did you work as an assistant to any other artists?
Yes a couple of times already. Recently I did inks for the last issue of what seems to be a relaunch of Maze Agency right before it was cancelled again. Penciled by Ariel Padilla in 2006.
How did your parents take to the idea of working in comics?
It's okay with them. Mom's cool. “Get a life will ya?!..”
They still insist to take other job options though.
How would you describe your workspace? Is it part of your home, or do you go “to the studio”?
I share a place with other artist friends that also serve as our studio. We all work and live there. I also have my own apartment but most of the times I'm not there so its still hasn't been set up as my studio. It's still good for drawing and a hang out!
We have separate drawing tables lined up, light boxes, computers that can initiate 3 lunar space launch simultaneously I think, an internet connection second to the speed of FedEx and Air 21.
It's a pretty much decent place flooded with comic books, art books, magazines, references, print-outs, compact discs, and 100 dollar bills! Yeah!
What job are you the proudest of? What's your most embarrassing?
Nothing yet right now. It will come soon and I think proud I'm surely going to embarrass myself! Ha ha!
Talk about your family: Parents, siblings, home situation. Do they read comics?
I'm the only one who's interested in comics and about its business at home. They are only interested in it if it's going to be a movie event or something.
What projects do you hope to work on in the future?
A one-shot, maybe a mini-series, and hopefully a maxi-series.
Where do you see yourself in five years? ten?
Professionally drawing comics, maybe a concept designer too! I hope Lost has ended by then too.
What's 1 thing you'll always find in your refrigerator?
Opens the ‘fridge and there's Fresh milk. “Want cold water?
Hey! Who took my last pizza?!!”
What's your favorite food?
Nothing special. Anything edible will do.
What are your favorite interests --Movies? Music? TV? Any hobbies? Sports?
I read comics of course and a big fan of Mark Millar and Warren Ellis! From mainstream styles of Brain Hitch, Terry Dodson, Alex Ross, Leinil Yu, Steve Mcniven to high contrasted styles of John Paul Leon, Mike Mignola, and Jae Lee, Sean Phllips, Alex Maleev and Michael Lark!
I go to see movies whenever I can. Pirates of the Caribbean 2 is the recent one I saw. No I think its Click by Adam Sandler?
Oh I can't remember.
I listen to almost any kind of genre in music. Its good to have loads of mp3's to listen to while working!
We're kinda hooked up on Smallville courtesy of Carlo Pagulayan who recommended it. We're quite lost in Lost and never thought how it's going to end! We're excited now in the second season of Prison Break.
I also play some hoops with friends and some First-person-shooter games like CS, Unreal Tournament and Battlefield. I just started collecting toys for fun. Damn! These hobbies and interest BS actually eats up most of my earnings!
Have you ever thought of writing your own stories?
Nope. I think I'm very poor at creating one.
Ever been in a gang?
Nope but I wished I started Fight Club! Really!
If you weren't a comic-book artist today, what would you be?
Maybe an Architect or a graphics artist. But I wish I could be an international arms dealer. ”..Smart bombs, AK-47 anyone?”
Any closing words for your fans?
Are you kidding me? Arms dealers don't even have forum sites much less fans!
