Where were you born? Where did you grow up?
I was born in Makati City, Philippines. Grew up here too.
Schooling? Art Training?
I studied for a year and a half in the University of the Philipines, majoring in fine arts. It’s basically more of advertising. I learned drawing comics from looking at the works of Nestor Redondo, Hal Santiago, Mar Santana, Jim Lee, Leinil Yu and others.
How long have you been working professionally?
As an advertising professional, I’m in the industry for four years now. As an illustrator, in general, I could say that I’m being paid to draw for ten years now. As a comic book artist, that’s what I’ve been working on lately. I want to draw comics ‘til I can no longer hold a pencil.
What things -- both in art and otherwise -- have you worked on besides comics? Are comics a full-time gig for you or part-time?I’ve done storyboards, pinups, brochures, posters, print-ads and some indie comic books too, like Budjette Tan’s TRESE and Robert Garrett’s GALTOW. And also some Filipino Horror comics from way back.
How did your parents take to the idea of working in comics?
They are very supportive of anything I do. And they know how I love drawing since I was three so they want to see this dream happen as much as I do.
How would you describe your workspace? Is it part of your home, or do you go "to the studio"?
I rent a tiny space in Makati. I work and live there.
What are you currently drawing? Comments on that project?
I’m working on an Indie book called TRESE. A Filipino comic that I helped conceptualize with a writer/friend, Budjette Tan. A pre-Glasshouse contract project.
What I’m really giving more time now, is building my Glasshouse comics portfolio.
What is the interest in comics where you live?
The Filipinos devour comics like rice. Well, once before. Like 20-30 years or so, before. Now most people don’t really have time to read so much so the ‘komiks’ industry died. But fortunately, it’s being resurrected by individuas here who just won’t give up their love for storytelling and drawing.
