I've been working on comic books since 1994, I began my career drawing some pieces for The Marvel Company.
My first work was a fill in, in a comics called HYPERKIND UNLEASHED, It was a big work to me by the time, due to the fact that I was very young, only 18, and I didn't have a great deal of knowledge on comics in spite of having worked on some advertisement illustrations previously i.e ( The Brazilian Playboy magazine) besides some animation and storyboard jobs.
I got my first work after a long endurance of drawing samples and more samples.
I was adapting myself to new styles such some of whose were the pop stars by that time as Jim Lee, Marc Silvestri, Todd McFarlane.
These names were in every comic stores available. Those Wonderful comics full of details used to be my source of inspiration and they influenced me and thousands of artists so far.
After Hyperkind I had the opportunity to take part in two Wolverine Comic books along with Adam Kubert -a great artist who deserves a lot of respect.
The editor proposal was that I would do half of an issue and the next one would entirely be made by myself.
I got very nervous, due to my little experience and a TITLE like that suddenly.
In the day that I would deliver the last pages of Wolverine, I got to the studio which I was working to by the time.
I was having a conversation with my agent here in Brazil, about some extra jobs but to my frustration he was telling me that there was no job available at the moment, but at the same time he was opening the Fedex package and then he said: Hey Fabio ! There is a script here for you, It's from Marvel...
The book was MORBIUS THE LIVING VAMPIRE , I got extremely excited about that because it would be the first of a series of uncountable comics giving beginning to my career as a professional comic illustrator.
Then, I was starting my career as a comic illustrator. After that I had the opportunity to work in many important books as X-MEN UNLIMITED, AVENGERS, AVENGERS TIMESLIDE...
A well known publisher IMAGE was about to launch the regular book MAXIMAGE from Extreme studios, where I remained as penciller for 7 months, always following the market tendencies.
My style had developed and changed a bit like it was getting its own hand. What allowed me to draw on books such as BRIGADE, YOUNGBLOOD, ETC.
Meanwhile I was in touch with CHAOS COMICS where through some samples I had produced a magazine named SMILEY .
It was great because it was full of funny jokes and anecdotes and some cartoons.
About styles, I would like to mention a few names and the reason why they have influenced me throughout these years:
· Jim Lee - Beautiful pictures and plenty of details.
· Carlos Pacheco - A fantastic story telling.
Among many other Masters of the comics, such Will Eisner, John Buscema, Joe Kubert, Alan Davis and so on.
Due to the fact of having worked with illustration of animation of Classical Fairy Tales, I've been since a few years ago gathering information and adapting and developing my style on a firm and cleaner trace without putting apart the details.
Another source is the wonderful style of Bruce Tim - Batman Adventures - and some cartoons.
I've started working at home, on an empty room at the back of my house which I turned into a studio where I stayed for a while.
A few year later, me and 4 more friends set up a professional studio and a Comics School at São Paulo down town, where I spent most of my time working, but I haven't abandoned my home studio, it's still right there where I create some jobs to show to the group and also the place where I read my e-mails without being disturbed.
I got jobless for a while, and it was during a conversation with Luke Ross that came across the idea of making some inking samples.
I bought some brushes, pens and I began training and coincidently when turned up the chance of a test for a miniseries ARMAGEDDON for CHAOS COMICS which would be drawn by Luke Ross.
I didn't think twice, got some copies of Luke's job and made the samples. Three days later, the editor told me that he had liked it and he'd would like to try me to do the inking on the Armageddon first page, if it's good then I'd be granted to continue the job.
I finished the miniseries of 4 whole editions along with Luke. Later another comics showed off and another penciller too. That's when the inker Fabio Laguna came up.
About jobs, I always love the current one, not that the former ones weren't but the challenges of a new one is always thrilling.
Now I'm on the animation production for internet which I make two monthly web-episodes for Ford Motors here in Brazil.
It consists of drawing, making of the story board and animating using Macromedia Flash on an average of 20 scenes every nights. At the same time I'm inking for few Brazilian Pencilers...such:
I've been working on pencil and inks for "DRAGON'S LAIR PROJECT" it is totaly awesome, due to the fact that I'd love that kind on style. it is coming up in August/2003 by CROSS GEN --- I hope that everybody enjoy the work!!
I've got my own character name AMARELÃO (Big Yellow Guy) which I have dedicated a great deal of time and attention because it'll aired on the internet.
I teach inking at my School IMPACTO QUADRINHOS, where I've meet great talented guys whose certainly will be on the comics scene very soon.
I've been married to Tatiana for 3 years , she's a wonderful person and she supports me a lot on my job. I always had my parents support too.
Since I was a kid they had put faith on my skill and in this career .
I'm thinking seriously about my and Tatiana´s future, on the idea of having children, have our own family in order to share our experiences and other sort of that things.
We're hoping it soon.
I like several kinds of food except our traditional feijoada, it's look doesn't please me. In other hand, what cannot be out of my fridge is milk, believe it or not, but milk, I love it! I drink it on gallons. (laughs)
I'm not into sport although I'm quite aware of its benefit but I'll try to be on a gym pretty soon, though I already said this last week.
I do like movies, I watch every new movie of the season. It's fascinating, it's like to be in another world, another reality.
I enjoy video games although time has been a scarce thing for me lately.
Whenever we have a large holiday, we use to travel to country side of São Paulo and there we plan of fishing, it's relaxing and funny.
Though I was born in the city, I love to spend some time on quiet places far from the madness of the city and the stress.
