Where were you born? And where did you grow up?
I was born in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia, and i grew up in the two cities (Tangerang and Jakarta). Now i live in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia.
Schooling or Art Training?
Yes, i have 5 years in art college (2000-2005) on Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ), Jakarta-Indonesia.
How did you get your break into comics?
First, at the age of 13, i decide to be dilligent at my drawing hobby, and started to imagine how if i became an ilustrator or something that i could give the best of my artwork to other people and to the world. And when i get into the art college, i started to concentrate on comics, learn them, making indi comics or self project comics, meeting the local comics community, and joining with the Indonesian comics society. Also looking for the first job on local comic scene.
What made you want to work on comics?
To show my works to everybody and to the world, to become a better comic artist, to make a cooperative works, collaboration with any other people /artist/ teamwork in the project and try to give something my best, again and again.
Who have your influences been over the years?
first, for a long time i was inspired with Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ballz, Dr. Slump, etc). i’m dreaming to be a very best seller comic artist like him. The second was Inoue Takehiko (Slam Dunk, Vagabond, etc). I like it a lot and my favorites are the Takehiko semi-realism manga style, especially the drawing atmosphere and his story-telling panel. Then until now, i really like Steve McNiven and Leinil Yu. I learned much from their drawings. McNiven is very great with the dynamic gesturers, angle or perspective, simple and interesting story-telling. Leinil Yu also have a very strong and powerful drawing style.
Any particular work of yours that you are most proud of?
maybe a little, but actually i never think about the work I've created. I dont know, i always see everything that is false with my work. And i keep trying to find out to fix the problem in the next work.
How long have you been working professionally in comics?
when i get my first comics job in 2002. that was an educational comic. And now it has been almost 8 years I have been working in comics.
You do coloring and penciling. Do you enjoy one more than the other?
by the time process, i focused on the penciling work. I also enjoy the other part, but usualy I only do it for my self-project comic or making a fan-art.
Do you enjoy meeting other comic artists ?
yes, i really like to meet and join with the community and came at the comics event in Indonesia. -it’s fun to do some sharing with the other comic artists and everyone.
Do you collect or read comics? -- and if so, which ones?
yes i read comics, but i’m collecting a little of them. I buy Wizard-Indonesian, several Marvel and DC comics title, also i buying alot of indonesian comics title, specially comics that were made by my friends.
Who is your favorite super hero?
Son Go Kou, Iron Man, Ghost Rider, Batman, etc.
Who is your favorite villain ?
DR. Doom, Shredder, (actually i don’t have J).
What comic do you hope to work on one day ?
i think, it is Iron Man and maybe the other Marvel’s great character- i really want to give my best touch on them, i hope. one outside that is Batman and my self-project comic.
What are you currently drawing? Comments on that project?
in this month (start in the past October-November 2009) i’m drawing some of character poses after i did one of the comics book title at the same client, a local Indonesian comics publisher. Now, i also did the preview pages for my self-project comics –an action hero title- i hope i can show its all on my gallery-sites on DeviantArt. I think i’m really enjoy the process, try to work hard on it for showing its best.
What projects do you hope to work on in the future?
i think, i would like to do my best work for whatever the comics title is. i realize that is my creative process journey as long as i life, where its became my passion in the comics career.
