Where were you born? Where did you grow up?
Limoeiro do Norte – CE, Brazil
Schooling? Art training?
I did not study in any school of art, all I learnt, learnt with Ed Benes and through books by Andrew Loomis, How To Draw Marvel Way and others. I also learnt with some professionals whom I make contact with.
What things -- both in art and otherwise -- have you worked on besides comics? Are comics a full-time gig for you or part-time?
I was oficce office boy in a bank. This was the only work besides comics. At moment comic books are full time work for me.
Talk about how you broke into the business --was it easy? Hard? Ups? Downs? Any interesting anecdotes? When you held your first published work in your hands, how did you feel?
My first professional work was for a small publisher. I did some submissions, they liked and called me about. It wasn't easy, but I got to finish all works. After my agreement finished, I was left a lot of time without any work, I spent some time trying to develop an interesting style and improve as penciller, and finally I got new work.
Did you work as an assistant to any other artists? If so, please talk a bit about those experiences.
I worked for artist Ed Benes, it's an incredible experience, I learnt a lot of things with him, I don't have much what to speak about, it's was a kind of training, while you work, you're learning and vice-versa. A great advantage about it's we became friends, that time
wasn't just a relation of employee and employer.
How did your parents take to the idea of working in comics?
They agreed about.
How would you describe your workspace? Is it part of your home,
or do you go "to the studio"?
I work at home, which works as a kind of studio, where my friends and assistants work as well (when I need them).
What job are you the proudest of? What's your most embarrassing?
As I said before, I usually don't like of my work, but I would say ANDREA D is the work I am proud of because it's title that I did in partnership with two friends (Alex Lei, creator and writer of the miniseries and Rob Lean, the inker). It's a work where I played, without worrying so much in showing technique from a technical and artistic point of view, it isn't impressive at all, but certainly it's the most amusing and fascinating thing.
What are you currently drawing? Comments on that project?
For the time being I am working in Demons of Mercy, a comic book published by Marvel Comics and it's based on a game by Maxum Games.
Also I am working in a title named Sidechicks, a web comic book.
Talk about your family: Parents, siblings, home situation. Are you married? Have kids? Names? Anecdotes about married life, how it relates to your busy schedule, etc. If you have kids do they understand your job? What do they say about it? Do they read comics?
Well, I'm not married and I live alone. I have a nephew who loves to read comics and other little nephew which has only 1 year old, but I believe he will love comics as well.
What projects do you hope to work on in the future?
I don't have specific project in what I would like to work on, to be honest there isn't any title I would like working, I like to draw, this is the most important thing.
Where do you see yourself in five years? Ten years?
I hope to be penciling comic books or to be a rock star (hehehe)
What is the interest in comics where you live? Do friends and neighbors know you draw comics for a living? How do they react?
There is no much interesting in comics where I live, there is still a lot of prejudice and indifference by here, but I am talking with people to change their mind.
What's 1 thing you'll always find in your refrigerator?
Water
What's your favorite food?
Lasagne.
What are your favorite interests --Movies? Music? TV? Any hobbies? Sports?
I love music, movies and I hate almost everything that I see in the TV at moment. My hobby is play bass, guitar or eletric guitar.
Have you ever thought of writing your own stories?
No. I prefer just to do pencils.
Ever been in a gang?
No.
What's an average day in your life like? Walk us through a typical day.
When I am working in some project, I wake up at 5:40am, take a coffee and start to work. At midday I have lunch and sleep a little (30 minutes) and start to work again until 11pm. When I'm very tired I stopped at 10pm. I don't like to do other things besides to draw when I have a deadline to meet, no movies, no dancing at night or talking by msn or skype (in these last option I can talk if the subject is regarding my current work).
Do you have any great, unsold projects in your files that nobody's gotten to see published?
My great project (Andrea D) published last January.
Have you taught comic-book art or had any assistants? If so, talk about that.
Sure! When I need help I call an assistant.
The single thing you'd most like to be remembered for in your life is...?
Because of had been a good professional and a good person as well.
Any closing words for your fans?
Fans ? Do I have fans ? I'm not sure (hehehe)
But it would like thanking people who were really sincere by judging my work.
