RON ADRIAN

Where were you born? Where did you grow up?
Limoeiro do Norte – CE, Brazil

Schooling? Art training?
No, I'm autodidact, but I intend to come back to studies and to go to the university of arts.

How long have you been working professionally in comics?
I have been worked by 10 years.

What things -- both in art and otherwise -- have you worked on besides comics? Are comics a full-time gig for you or part-time?
I worked doing advertising wall and posters. I tried to work as a painter as well, but it didn't work. Now my work with comics is full time.

Talk about how you broke into the business --was it easy? Hard? Ups? Downs? Any interesting anecdotes? When you held your first published work in your hands, how did you feel?
Well, a friend of mine knew Ed Benes was looking for an assistant, then I visited him and did some drawings, he liked them and invited me to work with him. Give up to getting an own work it was between 3 and 4 years, exactly in 1998, a kind of 7 pages independent work. I noticed comics wasn't only scratch on a piece of paper since I had got to redo all 7 pages. I liked a lot when I get my first published work.

Did you work as an assistant to any other artists? If so, please talk a bit about those experiences.
Yes, I worked with Ed Benes. It's a great experience because he was always available to teach me how to draw comics.

How did your parents take to the idea of working in comics?
I always had  the support of my grandmother, my mother and my brother. My father didn't believe me a little, but even so he never discussed about.

How would you describe your workspace? Is it part of your home,
or do you go "to the studio"?
I work at home. At moment my home is a little small, my exact workspace is in the living-room (hehehe).

What job are you the proudest of? What's your most embarrassing?
Darkchylde series, some Lady Death issues and the last illustration work I did for a Marvel book. And job which embarrassed me a little was Flash because I was trying to change my style, I think it wasn't a good moment to do this and this way I confused me and didn't get to show my real work.

What are you currently drawing? Comments on that project?
At moment I still waiting to get a work. While I have been studied a lot and penciled some commissions.

Talk about your family: Parents, siblings, home situation. Are you married? Have kids? Names? Anecdotes about married life, how it relates to your busy schedule, etc. If you have kids do they understand your job? What do they say about it? Do they read comics?
My parents support me a lot, for my professional career and support my brother Rob Lean as well. Rob is other important person to support my career and he works with me as inker. I'm married and recently my wife had our first son. My son has 5 months.

What projects do you hope to work on in the future?
Ihope to work with characters from my childhood: Wolwerine, Punisher and Batman. Another dream is to be able to work on a small project and to collaborate to do it big.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Ten years?
Iwould like to be recognized as well as other great artists. And with my own project done.

What is the interest in comics where you live? Do friends and neighbors know you draw comics for a living? How do they react?
I think adolescents are more interested in comics nowadays, and some of them already think to work for comic book market. Some friends of mine know, a few of them understand and others not. They think that since I am always at home, I am not working (hehehehhe). And my neighbors think strange about (hehehehhe).

What's 1 thing you'll always find in your refrigerator?
Sweet milk

What's your favorite food?
Macaroni

What are your favorite interests --Movies? Music? TV? Any hobbies? Sports?
See a good movie at weekends, listening a good music while I work, soccer and play guitar to relax.
Have you ever thought of writing your own stories?
I'm still thinking about, trying to put some idea on the paper.

Ever been in a gang?
No

What's an average day in your life like? Walk us through a typical day.
I wake up early, have a fast snack, play a little with my son, go to my drawing board, work until even 11:30 am, have lunch and rest until 1:30pm, then return for my work and go until 5:30pm. I stop for a fast snack and to check news about comics in the web. I return again to my work by 7:00pm from 9:00pm. This is my current  routine, but when I'm working in some comic book, depending deadline my routine is totally changed.

Do you have any great, unsold projects in your files that nobody's gotten to see published?
Not yet.

If you weren't a comic-book artist today, what would you be?

Maybe an athlete, I'm not sure.

Have you taught comic-book art or had any assistants? If so, talk about that.
I did a kind of volunteer work for an NGO in the city I where live. I teached some 8 to 15 years old children. I had an assistant only in this period.

The single thing you'd most like to be remembered for in your life is...?
I would like to be remembered as a good father, a good husband and a great artist.

Any closing words for your fans?
It's very important to study, don't ignore the artistic vision of the other people, it's freedom. Be persistent and learn to deal with critique. Faith in God and go ahead.
