Where were you born? Where did you grow up?
I was born in São Paulo and today I live in Belo Horizonte .
Schooling? Art training?
I've studied drawing and comics in Casa dos Quadrinhos Escola de Artes Visuais (Comic Book House School). I´ve also studied Architecture and Urbanism in the Federal University of my State (EA-UFMG). Today I study Fine Arts in the EBA-UFMG.
How long have you been working professionally in comics?
Professionally, no more than two years.
What things--both in art and otherwise--have you worked on, besides comics?
Today, I do advertisement illustrations, local comic books and samples. I still do not live only with comics.
Talk about how you broke into the business--was it easy? Any interesting anecdotes? When you held your first
published work in your hands, how did you feel?
I´ve started as anyone starts, drawing projects of my own and copying well-known artists, as Jim Lee and Joe Madureira.
After a talk with Campiti here in Brazil , I realized that I have to make that as a living. Today I study and fight for a place like many of my buddies.
When I got my first work in comics, I think I´ve talked with twenty people by phone in a 10 minutes space! It was very cool!
How did you settle on the style(s) you're currently using?
I try to evolve in various styles because I like various styles. I appreciated since the realistic style, like Adam Hughes, Brian Hitch, Jonh Cassaday and Carlos Pacheco, to cartoony styles, like Humberto Ramos and J. Scott Campbell.
Did you work as assistant to any other artists?
I´m always working with other artists. Since I´m trying to improve my pencil technique, I´m always aside inkers and colorists. During a time, I´ve worked with a team to produce the Fahrenheit 100 graus Comic Book, where two guys stayed on the lay-out, two pencillers, two inkers, three to four colorists and two writers. It looked like a japanese manga production! In this case, I pencilled the landscapes.
How did your parents take to the idea of working in comics?
Trough hours of laughs, silence, and cries, I´ve got their understanding. Just kidding! I´ve talked with them a long time, and got total approval. Specially after my first payment...
How would you describe your work space? Is it part of your home, or you go to the studio?
I´ve work most of the time at home, where I have my desk, computer and references. Sometimes I also work at Bigjack Studios.
What job are you the proudest of? What's your most embarrassing?
I´m proud of the Sketch Cards I made and the Comic Books Hardballers and Thistleheart that I'm working these days. Also, the local comics that we produced, specially the Fahrenheit 100 graus and Alienz comics.
The most embarrassing moment I had was making women poses for reference photos...
What are you currently drawing?
Nowadays I'm drawing the Comic Books Hardballers and Thistleheart plus Brazilian independent comic books.
Talk about your family.
My parents are very great! They give me all the incentive I need in my studies. I´ve got a musician brother who inspire me to continue with art.
What projects are you hoping to work on in the future?
To work exclusivelly with comics. I´d be very happy if I could draw Spider-Man and X-Men stories
Where do you see yourself in five years? Ten?
By the next five years, to work exclusivelly with comics. And in ten, I´d be very happy if I could draw Spider-Man and X-Men stories!
What is the interest in comics where you live?
I got a bunch of friends interested in comics, most of them in the studio and at the University. I even have some projects with some of them. The ones who don´t read comics do not understand what I do.
What's 1 thing you'll always find in your refrigerator?
PIZZA!!! (it´s a joke! Actually, I´m on a diet...)
What's your favorite food?
PIZZA!!! COWABUNGA!!!!
What are your favorite interests --Movies? Music? TV? Any hobbies? Sports?
I like of many types of comics and movies (Hoorray to Tarantino!).
Talking about music, many national instrumental songs and jazz.
Since I started to work professionally with drawings, I´m looking for other hobbies. I´m thinking of someday being a drummer of a jazz band.
Nowadays I practice jogging and cooper. Of course, a friendly soccer match is always welcome!
Have you ever thought of writing your own stories?
Sure! I have two projects that are a little abandoned...
Ever been in a gang?
I participate of a gang of drawing-men. They´re weird people, eating brains in full moon nights...
What's an average day in your life like?
I normally wake up at 7:00 AM, go to University, come back, have lunch, and work with comics or illustrations. At the sunset, I do some physical exercises (when I´m up to). After dinner, I often study, work or draw more.
Any humorous or interesting anecdotes to tell about the comics business?
I love when I tell people that I work with comics. They always look at me with a strange face...
