Where were you born? Where did you grow up?
I was born in Rio de Janeiro and I grew up in São Paulo.
Have you already taken a drawing course/art training?
I’ve studied art by myself, always doing researches and learning new stuff.
How long have you been working professionally in comics?
Since 1998-ish, I started getting a few smaller paying jobs through the internet here and there, until within the years I was getting better comics gigs.
In what things -- both in art and otherwise -- have you worked on besides comics? Are comics a full-time gig for you or part-time?
The Ghosting for Platinum Studios
Battlestar Galactica Season Zero #7
300 Cards for Batman Universe, DC Comics
Comics are a full-time gig for me.
Talk about how you broke into the business -- Was it easy or hard? Did you get through ups and downs? Any interesting anecdotes? When you held your first published work in your hands, how did you feel?
I broke into the business a long time ago, but it was not a big thing, only a few independent works. That was in 1998. It wasn’t easy. Actually it’s still not easy nowadays. To make it a bit easier, I’m constantly studying new and old artists, to enrich my work.
I’ve got through many ups and downs, and I hope I don’t have to get through this anymore.
I don’t have any anecdotes, it hasn’t happened anything like that to me.
I was really proud to see my very first published work. Though I didn’t earn anything ($$$) with that, I realized I could make money because of the positive feedback I got from people.
Have you already worked as an assistant of any other artists? If so, please talk a bit about these experiences.
I’ve already worked with other artist, Rod. Actually he’s one of the responsible for I have followed this way. We had been working together in a project published in Brazil (Spirit of Amazon). It was 4 months working together that ended up in a true 13 years friendship. So, I can only tell that it was a great experience!
How did your parents take the idea of working with comics?
I’ve always been encouraged, my mom has always liked that. She used to draw for my brother and I when we were still young. She also used to buy paper for us to draw at home instead of going out and getting into fights.
How would you describe your work environment? Is it part of your home, or do you go "to the studio"?
Today, it’s part of my home. But I think about building up a studio in the future.
What work are you proudest of? What's your most embarrassing?
I still haven’t looked at a work of mine that I was 100% satisfied with. I always think it’s missing something.
I think the most embarrassing thing that it can happen is when you work really hard and you don’t get paid. That’s really bad.
What are you currently drawing? Comments on that project?
I’m waiting for the details of my next work at the moment.
Talk about your family: Parents, siblings, home situation. Are you married? Do you have kids? What are their names? Do you have anecdotes about married life? How does it relate to your busy schedule? If you have kids, do they understand your job? What do they say about it? Do they read comics?
I love my family very much. My mom has always supported me in my choice of being an illustrator. I love her very much and I thank her for the support. My brother is younger than me, and he’s also an illustrator. He lives in Swiss and he works with paintings over there.
I’ve been living with my wife for 2 years now. I love my wife very much, she’s given a lot of support, and she gets really happy when I’m happy with a work I’m doing. In the bad moments, when I get upset with something that went wrong in my work, she always lifts me up and she’s a very good companion.
What projects do you hope to work on in the future?
I like sci-fi a lot, I’d like to work with something like that.
Where do you see yourself in five/ten years?
I’ve got confidence in my ability. I believe that with my feet on the ground I’ll be really fine.
How big is the interest in comics in the place you live? Do your friends and neighbors know you make a living from comics? How do they react?
Here in Brazil, the comic book market is very small. My friends love comics, and they always have a good reaction when they see one of my drawings being published.
Tell us one thing we'll always find in your refrigerator.
Juices.
What's your favorite food?
Rice, bean, steak, chicken, fish and French fries.
What are your favorite interests? (i.e.: movies, music, TV, sports, any other hobbies, etc)
Movies, I love movies!
I also work out.
Have you ever thought about writing your own stories?
Yes! I have 3 stories that I’d really like to see published someday.
Have you ever been in a gang?
No! I’ve always been pro-peace.
What an average day in your life is like? Walk us through a typical day.
I wake up at around 9 am, I have breakfast, I answer some e-mails, I read some news of every kind and then I take a look at artists I enjoy,
At around 1 pm, I start drawing. Then I go until my inspiration runs out. I usually go until 3 am. This job is all about the state of your mind. That’s why we can’t have a daily routine every single day, because there are days which we aren’t able to produce anything, it simply doesn’t come out. However, when it happens, I know I need to run after the time that I lost in the previous day.
Do you have any humoristic or interesting anecdote about the comic book market to tell us?
I don’t have any at the moment.
Do you have any great unsold projects in your files that nobody's got to see published?
Yes! I hope to publish that someday.
What’s your complete list of published credits?
I’m not really sure, but I think it is 4. Like I said, I’ve done many works for independent publishers and I don’t know if they were really published.
If you weren't a comic-book artist today, what would you be?
Movies director.
Have you ever taught anyone comic book art or had any assistants? If so, talk about that.
I’ve never had any assistants, but I’ve already taught art.
The thing you'd most like to be remembered for in your life is...
Being known by my honesty and sincerity.
Any closing words for your fans?
Hello to all the fans, if I already have one! Haha
I’m a guy who really enjoys what I do and I’m always worried about doing my best, to please the ones that’ll look at my work, because that’s what I look for when I go to an artist I like, to enjoy what he’s doing.
So, I’ll always give my best, to offer the best as possible.
