Alex Flores, born and raised in California, realized he wanted to be a professional artist at the young age of 11. Inspired by comics, cartoons and especially Disney animated films. During Middle School he and his family moved to the Philippines, there, he finished High School and College(UST, Fine Arts). Originally having a cartoonish style, during college, Alex also developed a passion for photorealistic art and painting.
He landed his first job at an animation studio as a caricature artist. There he was able to get into the background department where he was able to develop his skills in digital painting.
Since then, he worked in different studios as a freelance artist doing character designs, animatics, storyboards and background art for games, animated tvc's and animations such as Biker Mice from Mars, Monster Allergy, and the animated film Urduja.
Still striving to improve his skills, Alex has become a versatile and flexible artist. In his spare time Alex enjoys digital painting, watching movies and playing computer games.
How long have you been working as an artist so far?
Well so far it’s been about 4 years, mostly freelance work. Being a freelance artist can be hard sometimes but the great thing about it is that you get to try all sorts of stuff.
What made you want to get into the art industry?
If I remember correctly I was about 11 years old, and I was watching one of those “the making of” shows about Walt Disney’s The Lion King. They were showing a bunch of the animators at work and that’s when I knew that I wanted to be an artist when I grow up. I can’t see myself doing anything that isn’t art related.
Who are some of your artistic influences?
Well there are a lot actually, but some of my all time favorites are Alex Ross, Adam Hughes, Andrew Loomis, Vilppu, Joe Madureira, J. Scott Campbell and Neville Page.
How would you describe your work area?
Well I work at home, I have my computer and pen tablet and a table for drawing. I do most of my work digitally but I still do draw on paper every now and then. I still think it’s important for an artist to learn things the traditional way.
What projects do you hope to work on in the future?
I actually don’t have any specific projects in mind, but I would like to work on comic covers and character/creature designs for games or movies someday.
