FUZION HISTORY

7. How has FUZION started?
In 2007, the illustrator Julius Ohta has started a society with the attendant Terumi Yamamoto, aiming to the goal of providing high quality image solutions. The studio has started providing illustrations only for the advertising market. Currently, the studio has been breaking the boundaries of its services to the demanding American comic book market.

8. As we have noticed, FUZION has just started its activities in the American comic book market, though it has already experience in advertising. Could you talk a little about it?
To act in the American comic book market has always been one of FUZION main goals. As Julius Ohta has already been attending some advertising agencies, it was natural to focus on the advertising market. Nowadays, more structured, we’re able to offer high quality coloring services also to the comic book market.

9. How’s the studio structure like?
The studio is placed on the 11° floor of a commercial building in São Paulo, with a beautiful view to the whole city. We work with Macintosh and tablets for all illustrators. We also count on scanners and professional printers. We choose to always use high-end equipments in respect to our clients.
Our team is made of 2 attendants (Terumi and Samara) and 2 illustrators (Julius and an assistant). However, our team members number varies often according to the amount of work.

10. What are the studio works with the most repercussion?
They are the ones we haven’t done yet. We want to make our next comic book work our best work. In advertising, in other hand, we’ve been collecting good results. Our aim is to reach good results in the comic book market as well.

11. What are FUZION future plans for the comic book market?
We want to provide the best colors, within the shortest time as possible, always with the most high professionalism level. It’s part of our plans to provide the full package – from the script to the lettering – in a near future.

CURIOSITIES:

12. How’s a day at FUZION like? Talk a little about your daily routine at the studio.
Julius’ answer:
Terumi and I always arrive around 9 in the morning. As soon as we arrive, we talk about the current ongoing works and we organize our routine for that day. At 9:30, the people start to arrive at the studio. Mrs. Irene (our maid) is always the first one to arrive, bringing up our breakfast. Then, Samara arrives. Our assistants are always late. Artists are a problem.

At lunch time, we change so we always have someone over here. After lunch, we keep working until we get the job of the day done. Who studies, leave earlier, around 6 pm. Terumi and I usually stay until 8 pm. At the end of the day, we review our performance and we plan the next day.

It’s not hard to meet us after the midnight or on weekends over here. We try our best to avoid this, but there’s always a client with something to be solved. That’s part of our job.

13. And what about the equipment, which ones do you use and why?
Julius’ answer:
I rather work with Macintosh because I’ve adapted very well to this platform. I use a MacPro with Cinema Display and a Wacom tablet and I find it amazing! We tried using PCs in the studio at first, but everyone had adapted better to Macintosh.

A curious case happened sometime ago. We had bought 2 PCs with a very good hardware for Terumi and Samara, because they needed to work with specific software that only work on PC. In a few days, Terumi had started complaining about her new computer. A week later, she came to me saying: “I think there are some similar software for Mac”. I got what she meant and we exchanged the PCs for Mac Minis.
